Pet Birds

The grey bird sits in his doorway
watching me
he seems content
he does not pick his beautiful feathers out
he holds long excited conversations
with himself
when his yellow eagle eye spies something
I'm eating that he wants,
he says "mommy" and expects me
to bring it to him
he does not live in Africa
he does not live in the wild
though he is a NYC condo bird
his wild world is disappearing by
the minute
If he had grown up in the jungle
he'd be dead by now
he's 15 years old, long past his
wilderness life expectancy
or maybe he would have been captured,
perhaps to ride to a foreign country
(like the USA) inside the tire of a car,
perhaps dying of pressure, suffocation,
massive dizziness, and/or mental terror

The other bird
a small green one
with red and golden head
at 13 has just turned teenybopper
he has his own telephone
he destroyed one and when the new phone
arrived tried to eat it too
so I gave him the old one for his own
after all teenagers do need phones
and I saved the new one from vicious
annihilation
he used to perch on the antenna but
that has since been bitten off
now he just sweetly cuddles the receiver
this bird gives new meaning to the
word torture as he traverses
my tender skin with his stiletto claws
pulls out my hair strand by strand
and drops birdie poop down my back
