Dear Hassanal:
Admired your poems trendously. You're
able to be lyrical without losing meaning. Remembering the Facts has a
powerful ending.
The When God is Dead poem
is both amusing and serious--you
take us back and forth between these emotions.
And the Sonnet poem [Swatantra Sonnet 73] sounded
like the Song of Songs in the Bible.

In Breath of Bengal, Hassanal Abdullah exhibits
a range of poetry from the common-place to the rarefied
profound and even to the midrashic. Thus, in the
opening poem, "With a Little Cash," he proposes
how, with a little cash, he would "open an art shop.../wash... /soft
feet with spring water.../spend [his]
time listening to the bees.../ sleep all
night in tranquility." In "God's Home"
he writes of how he "longed for a walk on the
horizon" and in "The Light of the Earth" how
he "captured the light of the earth
on [his] court-yard" and "tasted all the
flavors of this world." In "The Story of Ants" and
"Tales of Pigs and People" he creates new parables:
"Ants are in meditation,"
"Not everyone can be a pig." And in "Pandora at the Mailbox," he gives
new life to the old myth of the dangerous box "
... at the resevoir of the Century's mailbox."

Hassanal Abdullah is my introduction to the
land and people of Bangladesh, to
the poetry of Tagore and Nazrul, of
which he is a considerable continuation.
