From Barishal to Briarwood:
Bengali Poetry in English

Al Mahmud (1936-)

Remembrance
Do you remember that tabooed night,
Its obscure sky,
When to the cloud's opening
You pointed and
Said, "See, God rides there
On a horse,
A heavenly image, cloud-formed and manifest?"

Coition-content birds of night
Made sounds
Pouring deep scorn on us
In their language.
You unbuttoned your blouse,
And your silence spoke,
"Make me also like them
Unashamed."
